Since starting Professional Skills at Writtle University I have had to use a lot of reflective writing to reflect on my Uni work and lectures. I’ve never had to use reflective writing to this extent before and because of this my reflective writing has really improved, considering where I first started at the beginning of the academic year.

An example of when I used reflective writing was when I reflected on how my canine handling skills have improved. I struggled on this at first because I found it difficult to talk about myself in a reflective and discuss the positives and negatives of my work. I realised however, that it isn’t too difficult once you have done it once though it’s not too difficult to do it again as you just apply the same writing skills just to another scenario. Because that was my first piece of academic reflective writing it might not be the most outstanding piece of reflective writing but since then I believe that my reflective writing has improved as I have worked more on evaluating modules and work that I have done.

Reflective writing is a really good skill to have as it enables you to critically evaluate your work and take notes to then apply it to another assignment. It helps you to think of where you can improve and can be incredibly useful to apply what you think you could have done better to either the same piece of work or a completely different situation.

Overall I think that my reflective writing has improved since I first started at Writtle as after doing it again and again I found little bits to improve on and then I can apply that to my next piece of reflective writing. Reflective writing really helps me to map out what I didn’t do well, what I did do well and what I can do to improve.
